The older and older that we get, the more and more we realize that our parents are also getting older and that as much as we would have liked, they can't and wont' stay young forever. With that truth we also need to realize that there might come a time when the health of our parents or parent may become an issue and health emergencies may increase. If you live near by you should probably be prepared ahead of time for this.
One thing you can do to be prepared for unexpected stays in a hospital is to get a folder that can be secured shut. You should also get a box or storage container that's plastic and no bigger than an average shoe box. The first thing to put in the box is a roll of quarters. You can use these for vending machines if you are stuck in the waiting room for awhile.
Items that you should put in the folder should be your parents social security cards or copies of them, their insurance cards and a list of all of their prescriptions they might be on. You should also have a list of phone numbers of their doctors. You need to get all of this information from your parents before any emergency might arise. If there is a will or living will, this should also be put in this folder. This will save you a lot of time and stress during an emergency should one come up.
You should also include in the folder a list of all family members and friends that should be contacted should something happen. You should keep a relative list and a friends and contacts list on their own separate sheets of paper. These are people that you should have numbers for so that you can call them to let them know what's going on. If you don't call these people there may be a lot of hurt feelings that you did not include them.
The items you can put in the plastic box with the roll of quarters could be some cards, paper, pen, dominoes, crossword puzzles. Whatever you can think of that will keep someone occupied while stuck in the waiting room. Anything that might help keep their minds off of their worries would be a good thing to include in this prepared emergency storage box.
It's important to get together with a few other family members with regards to these little emergency kits. You should also have a back up person in case you are out of town if something happens. This person should be able to take your place and know where the emergency items are so that they can have easy access to them.
